“Loud Mouth ”
2022 Inkjet on Aluminum
Inspired by lyrics from Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, these nine augmented, retroreflective traffic signs tell a story about the life and death of a Black person. In the song "Mortal Man," Lamar has an imaginary conversation with the late Tupac Shakur about the spirit of youth and the need to as we get older continue to be radical and fearless in addressing racism and poverty.
‘Cause once you turn 30 it's like they take the heart and soul out of A man, out of a black man in this country. And you don't wanna fight no more. And if you don't believe me you can look around, You don't see no loud mouth 30-year old m*thaf*ckas
The traffic signs create a linear story addressing the obstacles and scenarios our Black youth navigate starting from childhood, who often, like Breanna Taylor (26) and Ahmaud Arbery (25), never live to see 30 to have a chance at continuing the fight.
