“House of my Dreams ”
10/2020 Printed flag, applique, gold leaf 36” X 60”
This image juxtaposes an image of a White House against black and white stripes referencing the “Big House”. Black and brown people disproportionately are more likely to see the inside of the prison in search of the American Dream. The aspiration for a better life in the face of systemic barriers is in fact a dream. We are all sleepwalkers. Institutions like the Capitol building, courthouses, prisons, banks and museums uphold the legacy of white supremacy. The idea there is a house of my dreams I can get by working hard is a half-truth. I have to be perfect. I have to live long enough. I have to avoid all of the environmental pitfalls. I have to ignore the basic narrative of all of the movies and music I consume depicting how/who black men are and should be. The problem with the “American Dream” is it does not include me. I’m awake enough to see it.
