Chateau Coppage is an imaginary upscale fashion house that centers Black creatives. From jewelry to accessories and garments, there is a history in both fashion and art of Black creatives having had their designs appropriated, usurped and white-washed. One of the more famous instances in the fashion world is the Gucci/Dapper Dan drama that unfolded in recent years. In the arts, artists like Picasso adapted Black motifs and found worldwide acclaim not only during his lifetime but even more so after his death. More recently, Basquiat was at the center of a controversy after a white artist appropriated his style and motifs.
Additionally, Black culture is being used to aggressively market luxury items with no relationship to Black communities to black people through multiple avenues. These items often exceed what is affordable in the Black median income. Through the use of black bodies, black culture (including braids, cornrows and du-rags) and rap music, luxury brands have been able to siphon our collective wealth without giving anything in return.
“Chateau Coppage ”
Chateau Coppage aims to remedy this model by creating statement pieces utilizing the collective talent of Black creators without rendering them invisible. The premise is to use the brand to steer business toward the individual creative practices not only giving each creative agency but also relinquishing an equitable share of any profits made based on their own individual contributions. This fashion house does not exist to make money. It exists to hold space and highlight the predatory practices of luxury branding while simultaneously highlighting and supporting other Black creatives. When I walk in the door, others walk with me. They are present, represented and accounted for.
